Carter Cellars Beckstoffer To Kalon - 'The Grand Daddy' 2009
A new addition to the Carter Cellars line up in 2009, ‘The Grand Daddy’ Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a new block of old vine clone 4 Cabernet Sauvignon we were offered called A2. The vines were cropped down to yields of 3.1 ton per acre and we harvested incredibly perfect fruit in the early hours of October 10th. When it was delivered to the winery, we knew right way we were blessed with another gift from the To Kalon vineyard. Noticeably darker in the glass than the regular To Kalon, purple hues stretch to the rim. When swirled, scents of cassis, black currant, cedar wood and Provencal herbs combine with such lift it will take your senses over. On the palate, a belly full of ripe Cabernet Sauvignon fruit and moderate tannins form the base which allows this wine to flow seamlessly and coat with textures and flavors that are both exotic and classically styled. The finish is a menagerie of dark fruits, all spice, crushed rock and polished tannin fully engaging all senses. A short decant will get this wine rolling right now but age it for 6-12 years so it can reveal it’s true pedigree. A very impressive wine.
"Broad-shouldered, intense and tannic, offering a tight beam of
red and black fruits, with cherry, raspberry, cedar, sandalwood and
tobacco leaf notes. Ends with chewy, friendly tannins. Best from<
2014 through 2030." From California.—J.L.

"Good deep ruby. Deep, sappy aromas of cassis and bitter chocolate. Thick, round and rich, with almost port-like flavors of cassis, violet and licorice pastille. A bit fiery on the end but there's enough (natural) acidity to give shape to this extremely rich cabernet, which is from old clone 4 vines.."

The History of the To Kalon Vineyard
The Beckstoffer portion of the historic original To Kalon Vineyard in the Oakville AVA was purchased from Beaulieu Vineyard in 1993. Beaulieu had purchased the property from the Crabb estate in 1940 and called it their Beaulieu Vineyard No. 4. Napa Pioneer Hamilton Crabb first planted the vineyard in 1868 and it has produced some of the Napa Valley's best red grapes ever since. Replanted after phylloxera by Beckstoffer from 1994 to 1997 to multiple clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with modern trellising and closer vine spacing, the vineyard produces several luxury award winning vineyard designated wines. These vineyard designated Cabernet Sauvignon wines include Schrader Cellars, Paul Hobbs, Provenance, Realm and of course, Carter Cellars.
